How to prevent food agression in kittens?

Is it even normal? I mean I've heard dogs that have it, but what about 1.5 month old kittens? I've got a single kitten living with her mom, and she has started eating solids. She has developed this vicious attitude towards her food. If I move my hand close to her, she strats growling menacingly and slashing at my hand, and when i hand feed her she attacks my hand (and the food). The thing is basically psycho, and I'd like her to stop. I've considered stroking her while she eats, although that seems to set her off even more, but thought it might cease after a while, so does anyone have anything?|||I've had to deal with this once before myself and the vet mentioned to me at the time that it isn't completely out of the norm for a kitten to do this.

I know this sounds mean (and please keep in mind the kitten isn't hurt by this), but when getting the kitten's food ready pick her up just before you setting the food bowl down. After setting the food down walk out of the kitchen while still holding her. Stroll around your home, walk to the windows, go to the bedroom, whatever -- just continue to carry her no matter how fussy or pushy she gets in wanting to get to the food.

After four-or-five minutes go back to the kitchen and sit on the floor in front of the food with her in your lap. Keep her there for another three minutes no matter how aggressive she behaves. You may even have to hold her by the scruff and tap her nose while saying "no" in a firm voice.

If she is behaving well and settled, then let her go to the food.

Do this several times when feeding her. The next step will be to pick her up while eating, walk to another room, and set her down. It doesn't matter what she does at this point -- even if that is running back to the dish.

While this behavior happens it is NOT acceptable. Hope this helps. -- Andy|||IDK anything about food agression so I hope someone else can help you. But, it seems like you should leave the kittie alone when it is eating. definitely dont pet it while it is eating, the nicest kitties dont like that.|||It depends what he or she's been eating. Solids are not really good for cats because sometimes it contains a bad chemical. That is probably why your cat is acting up like that. Try and not let her eat those kinds of stuff. Cats are trying to get rid of it but they have anger trying to ease the pain.|||Rather give the kitten space and solitary treatment, it should calm down, it's probably used to having to fight others for feeding, this should pass.

How do you determine the food energy in a food that does not burn?

In school, we did a burning lab where we burned dry foods to calculate the number of calories it had. How do you calculate the calories in a food that does not burn?|||It'll all burn in a bomb calorimeter.

What is the cheapest staple food to survive on?

If you're homeless and starving and all the food shelters ran out of food to give you, what would be the cheapest food you could buy that you can live on for months at a time and not be malnuourished? Rice or some other wheat?

By cheap I mean price per caloric nutritional quality value density.|||Canned baked beans in tomato sauce. Can be eaten cold, very high in protein, the tomato provides vitamin C. Low in fat, high in fibre. No food is perfect but baked beans come close. :) A little high in sugar, but that's just energy, you'll need it.|||Don't get ramen noodles, they make you sick after a few weeks of only eating ramen noodles and it's not healthy.

Rice is good, and it's cheaper than ramen too. Brown rice would be even better, but unfortunately it's more expensive than white rice even though whole wheat (brown) is healthier. So just regular white rice. You can buy 40 net lbs. of it for several dollars|||I was really broke at one point when I first lived on my own, I survived on egg noodles, ramen noodles, and rice, by doing variations of them. For instance, ramen is like 16 cents a pack, pasta sauce can be found for 99 cents on sale, egg noodles are maybe $2, rice is cheap, canned veggies are cheap.|||Go to family and child services and tell them you need food stamps. They should give you a debit card to use at grocery stores if your income is low or you are homeless.|||I think rice would be the best option.|||raman noodles|||i think rice or noodles , are you homeless ? :O|||Um.. hotdog? How much canned food should I give my kitten?

We just got a 9 week old kitten. We keep science diet (dry) food out for him as well as water all the time. He wasn't eating it so I started giving him the canned food, which he seems to love. How much should I give him a day? A full can (for kittens)? I've been feeding him when he seems hungry, 2-3 times a day.|||Figuring how to feed a cat depends on the age, activity level and health status of your cat. I will address your concern by giving you advise base on the assumption that your cat is generally healthy and have no special dietary or medical needs.

If you have been feeding your cat dry food around the clock with a food dispenser, the first thing to do is to stop slowly. Kibble addict resist changes and it's not a good way to cut them off dry immediately. They are used to the smell of dry kibble - where food manufacturer trick their senses with addictive coating to entice them to eat. Also, your cat is used to the crunchy texture of dry kibbles and will resist eating wet.

What you need to do is a gradual transition - introduce her to wet food slowly. Start off with a mixture of what she is eating now and mix it with the wet food.

If your cats eat both wet and dry, you can eliminate the dry almost immediately. On the other hand, if they are kibble addicts, you need to go slow. Feed more times, less quantity because kibble addicts are used to having food around 24/7 (if you free fed).

A normal healthy and active kittens needs double the amount what a normal adult would eat. And that would mean feeding at least 3 cans of 3oz can food or better yet, 4 cans, if your kittens are very active. For kibble addicts, you need to upped the number of feedings at the beginning but each time, serve only a smaller portion. Since they are used to eating all the time, you can try feeding them up to 6 times a day. This is just a very extreme recommendation because once your cat has established a wet food appetite, you can greatly reduced the number of feeding and increase the quantity.

Once you got your cat to eating wet food, you can now feed either 2-3 times a day. Always monitor your cat's reaction to the food. If after four weeks or so, you find that your cat seems to have grown a little more chubbier, reduce and the opposite is correct if she seems to be hungry at all times.

Sometimes, when switching to all wet using scheduled and portion control feeding method cat owners feel bad when they see their cats begging for more food. Resist the temptation to give in. Cats can very well go a few long hours without eating. Stick to your routine. But never starve a cat into eating.

The decision to switch to wet food is the correct one and I am glad that you have taken a step forward in ensuring your cat gets all the proper nutrition and species appropriate food.|||Kittens are rapidly growing and can eat enormous amounts of food to fuel that growth. Go ahead and give him that canned food, I'd try 1/4 can at first, and adjust the amount based on how quick he eats it. If he leaves some, then don't give more, but if he just wolfs it down, give a bit more. Feeding him 3 times a day isn't too much.

Canned food is really a much better diet for cats - it eliminates all the grains that cats (being obligate carnivores) do NOT need. And there is really no proof that dry is better for their teeth - even vets cannot agree on this. Some research indicates that the dry food actually sticks to their teeth and causes placque to form. We do know that the grains in dry cat food contribute to diabetes, and that an all-dry diet is hard on the kidneys as cats aren't big on drinking water and the canned diet provides more moisture.

My own kittens - rather my foster kittens - all get fed Innova's EVO, which they thrive on. It's a premium grade food that is all meat and no by products (that's scrap not fit for human consumption, so it's sold and put in pet food). Check the ingredients on the Science Diet.|||because he's so small, you should feed him about a little less than a fourth of the can (those are big cans for cats!) three times a day, if it's the larger science diet cans. if it's the smaller size, then a third of the can three times will work. or, to make it easier on you, give your kitten a tablespoon of wet food, and see how much he eats. base it off of that.

but seriously, straight wet canned food can give kittens diarea. your kitten is probably not eating because he has just been moved and expected to settle in a new area. he has also just been taken off of his mother's milk. instead of giving up on the dry (which is much cheaper, and gives tarter control too!) mix the dry food with the wet. it gives the dry food a moist smell, which is very appitizing for cats.|||Hey! I have two 9 week old kittens right now as well! They have their dry food out always, and I feed a can of wet food (5.5 oz) morning and night (they finish it off together pretty well). They are maintaining a very good weight on that... Once the teeth come in and become stronger, you'll want to back off and make sure they're eating that dry food. ^.^ Good luck!|||Canned food is bad for them it's high in sugars promoting type 2 feline diabties and causes teeth issues. A full can even for a ful grown cat is way too much.

Kittens need different things, ask your vet!|||That's what we feed our cat!! One can a day should be good, but if you can afford that much go ahead!!|||Firstly, Science Diet is terrible quality food. You are paying a fortune for a ton of junk. Canned food is better for him anyways, regardless of what people say. It doesn't stick to their teeth and make them rot. Look at tigers teeth in the zoo, aren't they pretty and shiny? Considering they eat a ton of wet meat, shouldn't their teeth be rotted? No. Also, wet food helps protect your cat from problems it may have later on, especially urinary problems. Cats need the moisture in the wet food. If your cat will eat it, you should give it to him. Feed him as much wet food as he request. You are feeding him just fine that many times a day. Don't you like to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner? Well it seems kitty does too. Don't leave dry food out over night. I found it lets my cats over eat and get fat. Monitor what your kitten eats like you would monitor a small child.

What is the most unusual food you have ever eaten?

I have eaten some unusual foods such as zebra (which tasted very strong), shark (not very nice), kangaroo (nice and tender) but probably the most unusual food I have eaten is gannet. What type of food should I feed a new siberian puppy from childhood to adulthood?

I have heard that for feeding your siberian husky that you shouldn't trust commercial dog food such as pedgree and other's. How to clean a parakeets food and water dish?

I have had both of my parakeets for about 5 years and I have had the same food and water dish for that long. )I can not currently afford new water dishes at the moment but I will be buying some soon.) But in the water dish it has a dark brown stain in the corners all the way across. I give my birds fresh food and water everyday, maybe bird food 2 or 3 days a week depending on how much they eat and water everyday that I can. Would you know any tips on how to clean them and disinfect them?|||The best thing that you can do is use hot water and (clean) steel wool. Never use soap or dish detergent, that could make your birds sick. If the stain doesn't come out, line the food/water dishes with paper towel until you can buy them new ones. The paper towel should stick to the water dish when you put water in, that way, the two parakeets can still drink from it. Replace the paper towel whenever you give them new water.|||Well, what I do is just wash it out with hot water and cotton balls and a little bit of dish soap or some soap (just a little, and make sure its washed out well) For the stuff in the corners cotton buds work well :) ave fun cleaning your birds will feel better and so will you!|||well with my parrot's food and water dish i use bleach to clean it . but then again my parrot is dead.|||Vinegar %26amp; Hydrogen Peroxide - It disinfects and it's safe!

www.avianweb.com has a lot of useful info. Check it out!

"Sanitizing / Disinfectant:

A combination of vinegar and hydrogen peroxide make a cheap, effective and non-toxic disinfectant agent and is said to be more effective at killing pathogens than bleach. . As it is non-toxic, you can use it to disinfect fruits and vegetables, as well as pet toys, equipment and cages. In tests run at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, pairing Vinegar and Hydrogen Peroxide mists, kills virtually all Salmonella, Shigella, or E. coli bacteria on heavily contaminated food and surfaces.

Directions:

* You need TWO spray bottles. DO NOT MIX the solutions together. Put straight vinegar in one and straight hydrogen peroxide in the other spray bottle. NOTE: Light destroys peroxide rather quickly. It's best to leave it in its original bottle and screw in a spray head.

* DO NOT DILUTE THEM.

* Remember for any sanitizer to work properly, the surface has to be clean before you use it.

* When you want to sanitize a surface (vegetables, cutting board, counters, sink, cages, toys. toilets, floors, etc.), spray one (it doesn't matter which one you use first) on the surface, then you spray on the other. When they mix, for a brief time the chemical action of the two make a very powerful sanitizer. You can rinse off the surface afterwards, if you want, but the result is non-toxic.

* Fortunately it is cheap. BTW, we use it in the bathroom to sanitize the counters, toilets, floors, etc. "

What is a good dog food that dont cost a fortune like Eukanuba?

I would like to feed my dogs a good quality dog food with good ingredients but dont have the money to spend on a really expensive brand. I have been with Purina but from what Im hearing that is not a very good brand of food. I dont really have the time to compare every label for the ingredients. Any suggestions and why its a good food would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.|||I used Diamond Naturals Lamb and Rice for my adult dog and Diamond Naturals Large Breed Puppy for my Rottweiler puppy. The 20lb (or is it 25lb) bags are about $18.00 and the 45lb (or it might be 50lb) bags run around $24.00. When the puppy is going through 45lbs a month the price is very reasonable compared to other quality foods (and even the crappy ones). I have noticed an improvement in their coats since we switched. We get it at Pet Supplies Plus.

Good luck!!!

*EDIT* Why do some of you have to be so rude in your answers. Call me crazy, but there comes a point when a dog is a dog. I refuse to spend $40 for 15lbs of food for my dog. My dog will not eat better than I do. The poster is trying to switch to a better food, but doesn't want to break the bank doing so. Get off your high horses and try to help! I really don't understand where some of you get off thinking that you are the GOD of dogs. Have you ever lived on a budget? Unfortuantly with todays economy not everyone has to luxary of giving their dog 5 star meals. Would you prefer they spend more money on food and not take their dog to the vet?|||I really have to agree with BJ's Baby Girl. There is a point where you say "look, my family is loosing out because we are having to spend extra money on expensive dog food." Let's do some research here and you would all see that. Lots of fillers, by products etc in all of those. Foods like Natural Balance, Wellness, Merrick, Solids Gold, Evo and Innova are all good. Iams, Euekanueba, Pro Plan are ALL JUNK. Not to mention the better the food the less they poop too!!|||Do you have a Wal-Mart near you? Actually, most dog foods are perfectly fine for your dog; it is good to want a high quality food for your dog, but the perception of "high quality" doesn't always sync up. Corn, for example, is often portrayed as an inferior ingredient. The reason for this is primarily allergies; dogs are more likely to be allergic to corn than other sources of nutrition. If your dog isn't allergic to corn, however, it is a fine ingredient (when used in moderation).

Consider some of the links people have provided. The Dog Food Project has a lot of information and a LOT of faulty conclusions. Under their list of ingredients to avoid you'll find Wheat Glutton. Why is it to be avoided? Little nutritional value. But if you look at the purpose it serves in food, one shouldn't expect nutritional value; it is a binder, it helps keep the food together. Avoiding Wheat Glutton, then, makes about as much sense as avoiding Baking Soda (it serves its purpose well, but the purpose isn't nutrition). Then there is Feeding Oat Meal. Its crime? Not as nutritious as whole oats. An amazing observation, really. To offer a comparison to this logic, filet mignon is also not as nutritious as a whole cow. Take a look under fiber and the crime of those ingredients is that they are filler. Fiber being specifically non-digestible, all fiber is technically filler. Fiber is also necessary for colon health. Under supplements you'll find Bone Phosphate. It's crime? It is used to balance the calcium and phosphate content of the food. As dogs need such minerals, I am not sure what is so bad about it.

It is good to be informed of what ingredients do in a dog food, but it is better to be informed and analytical. Know what the ingredients are and determine for yourself if the role each plays in nutrition is acceptable. Use that, not some over-zealous conclusions found on the web, to base your decisions on.

If you just join in the mindless pursuit of “quality” dog food (without ever determining what is quality and what is excessive), then you’ll just be wasting your money and doing your pet little to no good.|||I agree with isis completely. I was spending way more per pound on food before I switched to canidae...they utilize more of their intake rather than it all becoming waste so they don't eat as much.......and honestly per pound it isn't really more expensive........

It may cost more at the checkout counter, but you'll probably also feed half as much (that means half as much poop to clean up out of the yard, as well). I swear, my dogs look and feel healthier, too...no more ear infections (one required surgery for this), no more urinary problems, no more allergy problems...this food is the very best for my dogs...I wouldn't care if the price doubled...I save that much and more on vet bills!|||Royal C..., with my dog it works, from puppy to elderly , my dog, she's name is Diana, is 16 and she is OK, but I give her fruits, rice, and chicken too. good luck!|||We feed Natural Balance, Duck and Potatoe grain free allergy formula. Go here: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_…

You can find any food you want to research ingredients and go from there... unfortunately the better foods do cost more but it is worth it. See if there isn't any way you can save money in another area so you can get what you want. Cost wise, it is about $15-$20 (apx) for the better foods... so maybe (if you do) don't go to starbucks and set aside the money you would spend there.... or other places. $15-$20 adds up really quickly. :)

Hope this helps.

**Edit**

I appreciate and actually do understand ascribing to people believing "high quality" food advocates are "zealouts" however, bear in mind we just want to provide what we're willing to pay extra for-higher quality.

I do not necessarily agree with everything listed here, but this will explain better than I can why I feel it is important, if you can afford to, to feed a higher quality and subsequently more expensive food:

What kind of food are you supposed to give to a 2 month old puppy?

I have a 2 month old puppy, she is a cross between chihuahua and a mini fox terrier. How much baby food is the right amount?

My 8 month old daughter is eating stage 2 baby foods. I have looked in my books for specific amounts on how much to feed her but the books only say take out only enough for what you will use. With a 4 oz jar I take out 10-15 baby spoonfuls of food which is about 1/2 the jar and then give her formula after wards. She seems happy and full and is gaining weight so I must be doing something right. Any suggestions from the moms here.|||For any child they will eat untill they are full and if they do not eat they will not starve. I would continue to do as you are untill she lets you know its not enough. Every child is different as to what amount they can eat and what makes them full. That is why no one really can tell you how much to feed. As for the bottle your dr can give you an mount your child should be intaking during the day and you can split that amount up so that you at least know if your giving her too much formula. If you are told to cut back on formula or give her more then you adjust the food untill she is a happy camper. Good luck,.|||Do what you are doing now. You say that you are taking 10 - 15 baby spoonfuls out (half the 4 oz. jar) and then giving the formula afterwards. Since she seems happy and gaining weight (I assume healthy weight), then you are doing good and right. That is usually what pediatricians say, dietitians and nutritionists for babies say, and I also go on experience on if it is making baby happy and healthy - don't change a thing!|||I found the baby center website to have some really helpful guidelines about how much to feed your baby and it is an age by age guide. The American Academy of Pediatrician's guide is very similar to this one. http://www.babycenter.com/refcap/baby/ba鈥?/a>

Go with your baby's cues %26amp; it sounds like you are doing just that since your baby seems happy and full. She will let you know if you are not feeding her enough or when she is full. I know that can be tough! I never know if I'm feeding my baby too much or not enough, but I try to go by his cues (fussiness, etc.). Soon, your daughter will point to the food when she wants more! Best wishes!|||My son just turned 9 months, but at eight months and for the most part he is still eatting this and his doctor said it was fine. 8 onz if forumula when he woke up say 630am then at 830am he would have a piece of toast/pancke/waffle/(any type of bread for the grain) and a 4oz can of diced fruit in light syup and some juice. Then at lunch time between 1130-1230 he would eat 1/3 cup of baby cereal with a # 3 fruit and some type of finger food like 2 of those wagon wheel treats and some juice. Then aboout 330 after nap time he would eat a stick of string cheese and juice. Then dinner time he eats # 2 meat, # 3 veggie, and a 4 oz of apple sauce and 2 animal cookies(This is his special treat he gets and he loves them) and some juice. Our ped doctor told us that by the time he was 9 months he should be eatting lots of regular people food and he is so we are almost at the point of stopping baby food for the most part and since he has been cutting teeth he wants more food he can chew. Our doctor also said that by 8-9 months if they are drinking 10-12 oz of fourmula a day they should be fine if they are drinking juice or water thoughout the day and he is drink about 9 oz of juice mixed with water and then just water. IT also depends on how big your child is and how active your child is my son was born 9 lb and 6.6oz so he has always eatten a lot. He is also super active for a 9month old which makes a big difference and we just went to the doctor monday and he is not over weight for what he eats. Hope this helps.

How much cereal or baby food should my six month old baby be eating?

I just recently got my baby to start eating cereal. She used to keep spitting it out. She still will not eat baby food. I'm worried that she is too dependant on formula. How do I correct this and how do I ensure she is getting enough food and nutrition? How much baby food and cereal should she be eating at six months of age? Any advice is appreciated.|||Damian was the same way but I understand why he didn't want cereal. Have you ever tasted that stuff? It taste like paste. I decide to make it a bit more appealing to him. I started to put smash veggies and fruits in the cereal. It work like a charm. I steam the veggies/fruit and puree, with some of the water that they were cook in. I then stir it into the cereal to a good consistency. There is no right or wrong as to how much she should be eating. Just let her eat as much as she wants, but I say make her at least 5 ounces and see how much she eats. Don't force her to eat all that you have made for her she will let you know when she is done.|||I am going to have to say I would not recommend any cereal. It causes severe gas and constipation in babies, and has little to no nutritional value. Babies can survive and thrive on breast milk and/or formula for a year, and even more than a year. So it's not a bad thing that she's dependent on the formula. But at six months, i would start to try to introduce regular people food that you could mush with a food processor.|||I gave my baby rice cereal and she did just fine. I gave her about 1/2 a cup I would say with pureed fruit or vegetables. She loved it and had no problems. What is the best hummingbird food recipe?

I heard that it isn't good for hummingbirds to be just fed a 4:1 water sugar food. I heard that it is hard for them to digest all that sugar and that they should be getting other nutrients, too. I don't want to buy a food mix but would like a recipe for a better hummingbird food if that is what is best for them.

I have tried to search this out and keep getting the same recipes over and over of a ratio of 4:1, water to sugar.

Does anybody really know what is best for them?|||You've gotten a lot of good answers about the sugar/water mix, but I thought that I'd add that I have several pots of nasturtiums near my hummingbird feeder, and the nasturtiums get visited just about as often as the feeder does! Nasturtiums are super easy to grow from seed (you pretty much just poke them into the dirt, water, and watch!) and will generally self-seed, meaning you won't have to plant them again next year. And they're edible! Amazing things. Anyway, good luck!|||4:1 in is fine. Hummingbirds don't get all of their nutrition from flowers/bird feeders. They also eat small insects.

If you have a heavily-used humming bird feeder, look under it and you'll see lots of tiny bug-bodies that have been excreted by the hummers.|||The best would be to have growing plants that provide the nectar, bugs (slurping aphids) and other stuff hummingbirds eat. Do research on what plants grow in your area that hummers would feed upon. Use the sugar water feeders as a supplement.|||Yes the 4:1 ratio of water to sugar is the best, boiling the water first, and mixing sugar while water is still hot. Store in a clean gass jar in the fridge. What you don't want to use is the red dye, which is hard for the humming birds. Instead, use a brightly colored feeder to attract those little "jewels of the sky" The hummingbirds use sugar water, nectar, and sap from certian trees as an energy source, because they have such a high matobolism and exert extreme amounts of energy. What most people don't know is that hummingbirds also eat small flying insects, which is where they get thier nutrients, protien, vitamins, ect. (I have gone as far as putting rotting fruit outside to watch the humingbirds eat the gnats flying around the fruit) Next time you are watching the humming birds in your yard, you may see them flying in a group of gnats, catching them with skinny beaks, with no effort. Binoculars will aid you in watching this neat behavior.|||Natural food such as a good honeysuckle plant, or any vine or flower plant that produces nectar like the honeysuckle.

Plant a few of these plants anywhere in your yard, and chances are you'll have the hummers around in great numbers.

Buy a good commercial feeder for when the vines are not producing, that will keep them a round in between flower outputs.

Try different color honeysuckle's as the bloom at different intervals.|||I use 3:1 myself. Don't know what is really best for them.|||4 to 1 water to sugar. no need to add food color, not good for the hummers|||Wild Birds Unlimited where I bought my feeder gave me a recipe for 1/4 cup sugar to one cup BOILED water. It's important to boil the water to help break down the sugar. My birds come back each year and fight over the feeder.|||Humming birds get all their energy from pollen. Pure sugar mixed with 4 parts water is how I have fed them for years.

What kind of dog food should I feed my puppy?

She is 8 weeks old and the breeder said she has been on puppy chow. I bought her puppy chow so she wouldn't have diarrhea but I would like to change it to a better quality food. Also her poop has been a little soft lately (kind of like pudding but formed and probably thicker) do you think it could be stress or maybe the cheap dog food?

Also any tips on how to change her food?|||my puppy had the exact same thing in the beginning. it turned into diarrhea and the vet said it was a mix from the stress and poor dog food. they switch im immediately to royal canine and his poops went back to normalabout a day later! i would transfer you puppy to a better food like royal canine puppy or blue buffalo but do it in transition phases. 75% old 25% new for a few days then 50/50 for a few days then 75% new 25 % old for a few days. she should easily transition. breeders usually use very cheap puppy food so they can get it in bulk. my vet said my pup needed to be switched right away.|||Nutro offers lots of options for your puppy. They have Lamb Meal %26amp; Rice formulas, Large Breed Formulas, and Small Breed Formulas. Nutro foods don't contain any fillers, animal by-products, artificial preservatives, or artificial colorings, in any of their foods. And when changing foods just make it gradual, and mix a little bit of the old food in with the new so it doesn't knock her to much off balance.|||There are many good puppy foods out there, select a high quality food, then introduce it slowly.

How much food shoud a newly adopted stray be eating?

We recently adopted a stray who is hungry all of the time. She is fed 2/3 of a cup of food a day but every time we walk by her dishes she starts to beg for food. Is it possible for her to eat too much? Should we just be feeding her as much as she can eat for the first few weeks? She is very small and very skinny, but we are worried that she will gain weight too quickly. Please help us!|||Be careful with stray cats and how much you feed them. They have what I refer to as "stray cat syndrom" which translates into see it, eat it and like you suspect they can and do get fat fast.

The proper amount to feed per cat/per day should be about 5.5 ounces of wet (high quality grain free canned or Raw Meat/Bones/Organ) food.

The calories in that amount of food are sufficient for most "normal" sized cats. Of course a highly energetic cat will need more food to keep it healthy, and a lazy cat will need less food to keep it from getting obese. But 5.5 ounces of wet food per day is a good place to start.

A great place to learn about feline nutrition is www.catinfo.org|||I have always left kibble out for my cats 24/7 along with lots of fresh water. Cats are nibblers and eat a few pieces of food several times each day. This is what I would do for your stray. If she is hungry all the time, just keep the bowl full all the time so she can eat when she wants. In some cases with strays, they will overeat because they are in the habit of never knowing where their next meal will come from. I've had dogs and cats with that behavior after bringing them home from a questionnable situation. They were so surprised by all the available food and did gain some weight. However, when they realized, "Hey, Mom is going to keep putting this food out for us everyday and we don't have to worry about getting hungry", their eating habits regulated, they lost any excess pounds they had gained and their eating and weight stabilized. She should be fine. Hope you had her checked out by a VET to make sure she is basically healthy and had the proper immunizations and probably needs worming. Bless you for adopting her and giving her a home. It's a wonderful thing to do and I find it is so rewarding. Best of luck to you.|||feed the poor thing.

if she gains too much weight, you can cut back later. but right now ,she is hungry, strays are always hungry. if you put a lot of food out, she will realize it will always be there and stop eating so much. right now she doesnt know when you will feed her again so she eats it all.

i have never measured food and my cats are 15 years old and not fat. a can of food twice a day, bowl of dry kept full all day.

edit - i assumed you meant adopted from a shelter, if you mean you just picked it up off the street, it needs a vet first, it may have worms , which is easily treated, but it will eat a lot.|||Depending upon what you are feeding this cat, you should feed it no more than twice a day. My cats have me wrapped around their claws some and I do give snacks but I try to not feed them more than in the morning.

Have you taken this cat to the vet to be examined for worms and any other problems? Sounds like she might have them but then again, if she's a stray, she may also just be reacting to previous abandonment issues.

Give her lots of love, a meal or two extra for a few days, make the trip to the vet and then pare back in next two weeks to either one or two average meals a day. An average meal is a handful of dry food to a teaspoon of canned if she's skinny.

Check with your vet for further advice on nutrition when you go see about other issues.

I've had cats now for 20 years, but once in awhile I have issues with mine too....it is like they know when to throw ya a curveball, just like kids....ENJOY!

Best wishes with new baby!

--Jenn|||it really matters how long you've had this stray i would deff kepp feeding it if you have had it less then a week but anylonger take her to a vet and se what to do but i would give her lots of fod ethier wayy till she doesnt gain weight to make sure shes healthy|||it depends on how old she is. ask a vet about how much food you should feed her or on the lable of the food package you have, it might tell you how much to give her. i hope she grows to be a very good kitty for a long time!|||Have you wormed her?? I would feed her the right amount but over several times in a day. Good nutrition is important right now, but she may always be focused on food from days of none.

I used to have an extremely small rat terrier pup but she was dying so we gave her to the vet. I have a rat terrier who's almost one now and she JUST moved up to dog chow, because my mastiff needs large food. Just remember though, Im good at answering horse questions, so this may not be a real good answer. This is just what I do.|||If you're puppy is really small, you might want to go to the pet store and see what they have. I don't know where you live, so i cant recommend anywhere that you could go to.

I would go for the real dog food, not leftovers. Most dog food is soft, and dogs love to eat it. Just make sure you get one without large chunks in them.

Avoid food with grains in them.

You could also try normal dog food softened down by being soaked in water. If this doesn't work, do as i said earlier and go to a pet store to buy the right type of food, depending on her age.

Hope this helps!!|||Iams Puppy Chow is the best, maybe put some watter in it to soften it up. It comes in a yellow bag. It is a little more expensive then most, like $5 more, but its worth it. We raised 11 Labs on it.|||kibbles 'n' bits

What kind of dog food is best for a dog that farts alot? Anything thats helps his digestion?

I have a pit bull, and im not sure if its just the breed or my dog, he doesnt get fed people food. Ive tried a few dog food brands (pedigree dry and wet food and science diet) and he farts SO much. Hes an indoor dog so the farting is an issue when i have guests over for dinner. Anyone have any suggestions?|||Add a smidgeon of baking soda to the dog food every time you feed him. |||We`ve had English Bull Terriers for years and years . You don`t know what a dog that farts a LOT is until you`ve owned one ........... LOL . Most Pit bulls have some Bull Terrier in them , so I imagine they can do a pretty good job of smelling up the house too .

Unfortunately , nothing you do will eliminate the problem completely , short of supplying guests with respirators . Dry dog food will help to a certain extent . If you stay away from dog foods containing lamb it`ll help reduce the "toxic" odour .

Good Luck !|||Most likely your culprit is the food. Pedigree is one of the foods high on my list of foods I'd rather not feed. It is loaded with corn, other fillers, and junk. Science Diet is also loaded with corn (it's the first or second ingredient in most of their foods). Most dogs do not digest corn very well at all. It makes them gassy. And many dogs are actually allergic or intolerant of corn. Soy and wheat are other common problem grains.

Dog foods list their ingredients according to weight/volume (before processing)...so there is more of the first ingredient on the list than any of the other ingredients. Look for a food that lists a specified meat meal (lamb meal, chicken meal, salmon meal, etc) as the first ingredient. If a specified meat (chicken, lamb, etc) is the first ingredient, make sure that a specified meat meal is the second. This is because ingredients are listed by volume BEFORE processing. Since meat is largely water, most of that volume is actually lost during processing...so there will be far less meat than whatever the next ingredient on the list is. Try to avoid foods that list more than two grains in the first five or six ingredients. Grains are necessary in most dry dog foods because they act as a binder, but most dogs do not digest them very well. Avoid any food that lists corn of any kind anywhere in the first five or six ingredients (this eliminates most foods containing corn). Finally, avoid any food that lists salt, sugars (including fructose and sucrose), or artificial colorings ANYWHERE on the ingredients list. These ingredients do not serve any nutritional purpose and are there only to make the food seem more appealing to dogs (or in the case of colorings, their owners). If the food was made from quality ingredients to start with, they wouldn't need to make it seem more appealing.|||Use Canidae, its good dog food! that won't make ur doggie gassy!|||READ YOUR LABELS any food that has a lot of by-products and useless grains like corn, wheat and soy will cause digestion problems pedigree and science diet are some of the worst in this area!!!! Think about it this way, the more veggies you eat the more gassy you are! that is what beano is made for. The key things to remember are less grains (no corn wheat or soy) high meats on the ingredients (first at the very least second) and DON"T OVER FEED! this is a problem too. that's why fat people are more gassy. Another good way to think of it is that protein is made of nitrogen. Undigested protein turns onto ammonia which is the stinky part of urine. The less undigested protein, the less stink out the back end.

My suggestions are Urban Wolf - a make at home diet

or Holistique by Solid Gold- This is for dogs with digestive problems. It is Oatmeal and Fish a flavor dogs love!|||Well having over 30 Yrs experience with dogs and especially boxers(who fart alot)lol, you can do 2 things.First give your dog a fruit flovored yogurt.1 per day for at least a week.Second go to a dog store and get some charcoal dog bones and give him 1 for every ten pounds of body weight. There is one thing that you have to remember any time that you worm your dog you will have to repeat this process because the anti-boitics in the wormer will kill all the good bacteria in the dogs intestinal tract along with the bad, so you have to put the good back in.You should do the same thing in humans.|||Try talking to your vet|||Stay away from wet food. What is a good food processor to use for making baby food?

What I am using now doesn't break up all the food. It leaves small chunks and I want to use something that will really break down the food and make it smooth. I add plenty of liquid. Any good websites for info also?|||In order to get a truly smooth pureed product, you're best off using two items: 1) a food processor to do the bulk of the dirty work and 2) a fine mesh strainer.

1) Cook the food thoroughly, until it is fork tender - i.e., you can start mashing it easily with a fork.

2) Put the cooked food in the food processor, reserving the liquid in case you need to thin it out.

3) Puree the food until all of the big chunks are gone.

4) Transfer the food to a fine mesh strainer (over a bowl) and force the food through the strainer using a rubber spatula or a spoon.

5) If necessary, use some of the cooking liquid to thin the resulting paste. If desired, you can push the food through the strainer again.

What dog food is recommended for overweight dogs?

My dog is overweight and I need to help her lose weight. I am going to have her exercise more, but I would also like to change her food. What brand/type of dog food is recommended to help with this?|||Do you let your dog feed itself? I mean, just letting her eat whenever she feels like it? That could be the problem. I think there's a certain amount you should feed your dog daily (like, example, 2 cups for 30lbs of dog). That could be the issue. There's also treats that help with overweight dogs (not 100% positive if they work...but my dog certainly isn't chunky and I let her feed herself :)

Exercise should be enough... most dogs have a pretty high metabolism so it'll burn off the fat quickly. I feed my dog the all natural Taste of the Wild and so far no issues there.|||Exercise HELPS but the real KEY to losing weight is to EAT LESS. Any good dog food will do, just feed less, and cut out snacks and treats or only give one per day. You can substitute raw fruits and veggies for fatty snacks, if your dog will eat them. Keep her mind off food by giving her new things to do. Walk her in new places, teach her new things, buy some new toys to play with, with her. A very LARGE (so the dog won't choke on it) fresh (never frozen) bone to gnaw on will give her hours of fun and very few calories.|||I cannot recommend feeding any of the commercial varieties of meat-flavored baked paste with chemicals added. Instead, why not feed your dog actual food? The dog鈥檚 natural diet is raw meat on the bone. Try it. The dog will love it, the diet will help him teethe properly as a pup, satisfy his lifelong need to chew, keep his teeth clean and his feces innocuous.

The basic idea is to approximate a wild diet as closely as possible; raw meat on the bone and small amounts of organ meat [liver is most important, but also kidneys, pancreas, spleen, lungs and what is called green tripe]. Amount to feed is calculated as 2-3% of the dog's ideal adult body weight. Your veterinarian can help you estimate that; then you just do the math. You don鈥檛 have to be exact; all amounts are to be averaged over a week or two. Dogs [not toys or puppies] that get big, complicated meals sometimes will eat for two days and then not again for five. All perfectly normal.|||I've had a lot of people tell me that after trying almost every "diet" food out there, even the prescription foods, Nutro Natural Choice Lite is the only food their dogs actually lost weight on. It is a good food too. All natural with no by-products (heads, feet, intestines, etc.), no ground yellow corn (allergen and filler), and no artificial colors or flavors.

What are you doing about higher food prices? What is your strategy to stretch your food budget?

Rice prices have more than tripled in less than a year, and in China they rose another 50% in the past month. Price of a bushel of wheat quintupled since last year. So what are you doing, faced with higher prices at the grocery store? Changing the way you purchase food? Where you shop? Exchanging processed foods for unprocessed (buying whole chicken instead of chicken nuggets, etc)? Reducing consumption? Reducing snacks and "junk food"? Reducing waste? Or what?|||My shopping bill has been the same for 10 years - we eat fresh food everyday and I always use everything up. I don't need someone to make a dinner, freeze it, and package it for me -- I can boil noodles %26amp; add some chicken %26amp; veggies myself. I'll also buy stuff when it's on sale - stock up on dried or canned foods when they are one sale... but I refuse to join one of those stores like Sams Club or Costco - seems like a waste to pay money to spend money.|||I've started to buy budget brands of stuff - some of it's OK - it's a case of trial %26amp; error. I do get some fruit %26amp; veg from Aldi / Lidl. Generally I'm more conscious of what stuff costs %26amp; how much I spend - I look out for special offers.|||food prices are not going to stop going up and up and up. the first thing that one should do is not waste any food and buy very wisely. here are a few rules: while shopping do not buy on "impulse". make a shopping list of what you need for the week or the month. say good by for ever to junk food which actually cost a fortune. you will be on the way to healthier eating habits. avoid little expensive trimmings such as fresh basil in December (usually 1.99 and up for a few leaves on the death row...) or items which are not in season. do not , i repeat do not buy soft drink or bottles water or any designer soft drinks, they cost nothing to produce and are so ridiculously expensive! you will also have a lot more room in your fridge. instead install a water filter and fill some bottle as you need them. to replace soft drink, be creative... club soda with a splash of orange and cranberries juice will be very refreshing and if you do not find it sweet enough add one or two packets of splenda. buy seasonal fruit and produce. learn how to cook simple and healthy meals. here is an example: two filet Mignon ( between 8 to 10oz) at Costco will cost you about $20, two sweet bake potatoes $2,a large bag of spinach to saute for two $3, and a fruit smoothie for dessert with fat free generic yogurt, frozen strawberries, one apple and ice about$1.25 for two. your filet Mignon dinner will cost you about $27 for two. this top quality meal would have cost you between $ 70 and $90 in a good restaurant without tip for two!!! as far as snack the best one for me is a protein drink with fruit. you can produce great meals for an average of ten to fifteen dollars per person without eating pasta every night.i believe you still can eat well without spending a fortune using a bit of your brain... i do. ( more ideas later on...)

What happens if you feed puppy food to an adult dog or adult food to a puppy?

This is specifically for a small breed dog My friend feeds her adult dogs puppy food along with her 9 month old puppy. All the dogs are the Havanese breed. At first she was feeding the 9 month old adult food for a while because of the other adult dogs. Now she is feeding them all puppy food. I tried to tell her it's not good but she doesn't believe me. So what will it do?|||You are right. Puppy food is formulated for growing dogs that have higher nutritional requirements and burn more calories due to their activity level and metabolism. The protein and carbs in it are not in balance for a mature dog. Simply compare the analysis table on the puppy food with that on regular dog food and you'll see a striking difference. Simply tell your friend that if she cares about the health of her dog, that her dog would do much better on adult dog food.

It depends on the formulation, but most likely, the adult dog eating puppy food would just get fat if it eats enough to satisfy its appetite.|||It turns into a werewolf and kills your family.|||The adult dog food has a very high amount of protein and could make your little ones could get real sick......adult dogs love puppy food and cat food! It has more nutrients that developing babies need. But it certainly won't do any harm.. Esp since your puppy is 9 months.|||I think that puppy food is fattening for adult dogs. I recently rescued a little starving chihuahua mix and, though she was an adult, the vet recommended that I feed the dog puppy food for a while because it was easy to digest and would help her gain weight.

She also said that, regardless what the can says, all canned dog food IS puppy food.|||The adult dogs will get fat!!! Puppy food is higher in protein and calories than adult dog food. They'll probably be just fine eating puppy food.|||the adult becomes a puppy and the puppy grows idk shoot its like almost 11 ...why are u asking this?|||It has to do mainly with protein and carbs content. Which differs from a brand to another.

Although puppies need a decent amount of protein to help them grow, a too rapid growth (too high of protein intake) might increase their risk of hip dysplasia.

There are debates over puppy food vs adult dog food. But overall they should be fine.

Adults might get a lit bit chubbier with puppy food.

Puppies might miss some nutrients.

Since they are a small breed protein weight in the food shouldn't be excessive.

.|||The adult dogs will actually be fine, though it would be better to give them a diet more geared towards their age and needs. Puppies on adult food, however, can get very sick. It's not nearly as bad as feeding a human baby adult food, but it's good that she stopped. She really needs to just suck it up and buy two different kinds. She's doing her dogs a disservice.|||Hi,

First of all they call it puppy food because it is made special for puppy's.Puppy food has what puppies need to grow and for their bones and teeth and such. When a dog gets older their body's need different vit.and minerals for different parts of their body's.So if she is feeding her dog puppy food than he will not be healthy like he should be.You can go to a vet and get the information that you are seeking. And than give it to her to read.Or read it to her yourself.|||Adult dog food is more nutritious as compared to less nutritious puppy food as puppy needs less proteins then dog so feeding your puppy high protein food may cause him sick.,|||Your friend didn't ask for your opinion, and didn't want to hear it. You can't change her.

You might want to suggest that she ask her vet as the vet is a dog owner's best assistant in trying to raise a healthy dog. If her vet explains that the nutrients are not right for the dog, she'll believe her vet, where she will doubt you -!-

Why is food and beer consumption such a big part of sporting events?

Why is food and beer consumption such a big part of sporting events?

When you go to a sporting event everywhere you look there is food, beer and soda. People eat a great deal during sporting events and it is hard to imagine going to a game without food. One wonders it anyone would go these games if food and beer were not available. Why is this? Why do you think eating and drinking is such a big part of the appeal of pro sports games? Why is it that people are willing to pay such huge amounts of money for this food? Why is it that food offering is such a big part of the stadium/arena experience? Is it the tradition? What ingredients are in processed junk food that makes it so unhealthy?

And are these type of foods harder to burn off in your daily food consumption then whole or organic foods? Its hard living in America and watching what you eat when most food here is not authentic.|||MSG (Monosodium glutamate) Corn Syrup, High Fructose Corn Syrup (which is worse than regular corn syrup, but they are both awful for your body.) Any preservatives, canola oil, soybean oil, (or any hydrogenated oils,) Food coloring, refined sugars etc....

(which if the ingredients say sugar, most of the time it is refined sugar.) But it's more than just the ingredients, there are certain processes they put the food through that are unhealthy because it is taking the food from the natural state to an unnatural state which your body is not meant to break down. It is very hard on your body and your body becomes toxic because of the chemical reactions from the processes and the ingredients that should not be mixed together. These ingredients are harder to burn off in your daily consumption because they make your metabolism slow down, and then when you eat other food it takes longer for you body to go through the process of breaking it down, which makes you gain weight, (or become obese after so many years of eating crappy) That is why you see so many obese Americans, because their diet is mostly fast foods, and all fast foods contain these ingredients listed above. There is a gland called the hypothalamus gland, and if you consume high fructose corn syrup or any of the ingredients that I listed above (there are many more)

the hypothalamus gland gets confused or overtaxed I should say, which the hypothalamus is the gland that helps your metabolism to speed up, so when you consume these awful ingredients the hypothalamus gets over taxed and metabolism slows down and you start gaining weight and/or eventually become obese like the average American. If you want more information you can go read about this in a book called the weight loss cure by Kevin Trudeau, it is a great book I think that you would enjoy it!

Hope that this helped!|||Lots of fat, sugar, salt, and preservatives.

The fats are often saturated (the worst kind), the sugars and salt in high concentrations, and the preservatives simply aren't good for you in general.

It's not a question of "burning them off," it's a question of stressing your digestive system. Processed food have been shown to lead to higher incidences of cancer of the colon.

What are some good food recipes for dogs?

I want to start feeding my dog home cooked food for dinner (dog food in the morning, home cooked food in the evening). What are some good recipes that I can prepare for him?

So far I've tried baked chicken and carrots and he loves it.|||I feel sorry for your dog. He's really missing out. Raw is the most appropriate food for dogs. You'd be surprised at the health of raw fed dogs. We are able to kiss vet's goodbye. Raw feed dogs have clean, pearly white teeth. No need to brush or take to vet and have them cleaned. No bad doggie breath. No flea problems. Poop does not smell, there is very little of it, and left out in the sun, it turns to white powder and disappears because the dog's digestive system was able to remove all of the nutrients from it. Ever seen a commercially fed dog's poop do that? If you did research on the net, you too would see that raw is the most appropriate way to feed your canines.

Check out how easy these recipes are:

www.rawfeddogs.net/recipes|||My dogs love to eat leftover scrambled eggs and bacon in the morning, and sometimes hashbrowns as well. Also, this might sound disgusting, but grease from cooking poured over their dry food is a favorite of theirs as well. You might think that unhealthy, but it's actually helped to heal my dogs faster (in my opinion) when they come home with barbed wire cuts and such. My Australian Kelpie mix also like apples to chew on.|||My dad makes up this mix.

Mince, rice, vegetables of all sorts and beef stock.

Cook the vegetables in the micorwave or boil them until they are soft. Boil mince in water and beef stock and when cooked add vegetables. Turn down low, put lid on pot and let simmer until vegetables go mushy and it all mixs together.

It doesnt look to crash hot but his dogs love it

Hope that helps. I guess you could use different sorts of mince if your dog doesnt like brrf or just for something different. It doesnt matter what vegetables. Im pretty sure dad uses carrots, potato, a little pumpkin, little broccoli, spinach. Its just like making a stew for humans.|||Well dogs need by nature fresh food. They don鈥檛 find cooked beef in the wild, served with baked veggies, its not in their diet however some foods have to be slightly cooked to get rid of bacteria鈥檚 such as salmonella found in raw chicken and raw eggs. My dogs diet consists of steamed veggies to make them softer for him to eat, slightly cooked chicken, cooked rice and raw beef preferably minced, fresh chicken necks to keep his teeth clean and healthy (of course I hold one end whilst he eats because he would swallow the whole chicken neck *sighs*) and also a vitamin supplement.

Edit: Also dont listen to Dmv (whatever his name is above) who stated that dogs care not ALLOWED to eat fresh food. he was obviously under the influence of something when he wrote that.

What I have written above is not "people food." Calling real food "people food" makes it sound as though people are the only living creatures who are entitled to eat fresh foods.|||During the pet food scare, my vet said to mix FATTY ground meat (beef, pork, etc.) with brown rice and a vegetable.
