How much food & how often should I be feeding my 10 week old Basset Hound Puppy?

So far I have been feeding him a 1/2 cup of dog food 3 times a day. He still seems hungry after that so I am afraid he is not getting enough or is this to much? Also when should I increase his food amount? Thanks so much for your help!|||The amount of course in important, but the quality is so much more important.

Look on the bag and read the protein content and all of the ingredients. (You can read 100 bags for content and they are all different)

It may be that you little doggie isn't getting enough protein at his young age when they need more protein.

Also 1/2 cup seems not nearly enough unless it's a very very high quality food.

Try this for starters;

Feed him 1 cup early a.m. and if he eats it all, then feed him again in 3 hrs. only 1/2 cup. If he eats all of that, again wait about 3 hrs. and feed him 1/2 cup again. If he is eating all of that you are not feeding him enough to begin with. Feeding several times a day is best however not convenient for most people. So after this you will need to increase him a bit.

A Basset puppy is very active for short bursts of energy and then sleeps, but his body is growing constantly and therefore needs quite a bit of food thru-out the day to keep up the pace.

As he grows older his body will not need nearly the amounts he needed as a puppy.

I personally 'free feed" my doggies and not one is fat or out of shape for doing so. If you ask 1,000 people about which dog food is best you will get 1001 answers.

With free feeding a dog will (usually) stop eating when full and then come back to the food dish to "graze" or eat a little thru-out the day. Some dogs are NOT suitable for the free feed program, but most are o.k. for the most part.

The bag of food will give you an amount to feed a dog depending on puppy or adult. I am hoping you have a brand that specifically is labeled for "puppies" as their needs are much greater.

When weaned at approximately 8 weeks, you puppy, was also getting Mama's milk several times a day along with the food. Now he is only getting the food and water. Do not give your puppy cow's milk as he will have an upset tummy and give you a very sloppy surprise on the floor! Just read the instructions and follow or fill the dish until he quits eating. He may eat too much at first but will stop doing so in a day or so and then you won't worry about his getting not enough or too much. I know a lot of people who will not agree with the free feed program, but it works well for me and my doggies.

Aren't baby Bassets so cute!|||To be honest this is something that you should be asking your breeder, they should advise you on how much the dog should be getting.

If not from a breeder then i would have a look on the side of the food packet and see what they recommend in quantity for a dog your size and age.|||Since he is young you probably shoung be feeding him 2 times a day and a cup each serving. I have a 1 and a half year old Gorden setter and i feed her 4 cups a day, but she also gets lots of exersize. I hope this advice help good luck!|||He is growing so I would give him as much as he can eat. Puppies usually do not have problems with getting fat from overeating because they are so active and putting so much energy toward growth. If you give him too little, you can stunt his growth so just let him eat to his heart's content.|||Ask your vet to get the best answer, but are you giving him puppy food, or adult food? He still needs puppy food for the nutrients he needs that are in puppy food. What makes you think he "seems" hungry? Like, what is he doing to act hungry? It's hard to recall, but I think I started giving my dog 1 cup of food in the morning and 1 cup in the evening sometime after 6 months of age. At some point, you only need to feed him twice a day. Ask your vet. Good luck!|||Your should be feeding 3-4 meals a day. Start with the amount suggested on the bag for his age and weight, it will vary depending on what food you give him. If he's 10-25 lbs, the brand I feed recommends 2 cups per day for a puppy. If he still seems hungry right after he eats, I'd increase the amount, some puppies need more, and he will be growing rapidly at his age, being a little chubby is normal and desirable for a young puppy, so don't worry about him being overweight until he gets a little older.|||Think you should check with Vet they know the build of you pup some are bigger boned than others, sound like enough for a 10 wk old, my Lab close to 100 lbs only gets 4 cups a day so 1 1/2 cups for a pup should be right, but do check, do you give a few treats ??|||I have a 10 week old jackhuahua puppy,

and i feed her 4 times a day in little proportions like when i first wake up i feed her then about 3 hours later i feed her again then in the afternoon i feed her and than again before i go to bed.

Thats how her feeding schedule goes.

its better to schedule when you feed your puppy,

rather than letting her have free food when she wants.

they do not know when to stop!lol

and you will kinda know the time frame when she needs to use the bathroom.

It helps me cause she is crate trained and cant go outside cause i have 2 other chi's that use the bathroom outside so until she has finished her last set of shots i have to deal with the peeing and pooping in the cage,so its good to know when she goes so she doesn't make a mess lol!

Good question!

EDIT:hehe! me to i am feeding by pup, beneful, how funny we both have 10 week old pups and there both eating the same thing! hehe i know weird huh i think thats so funny!|||I'm giving my puppy as much as she wants.

But Beneful is really crappy food. Try something better.
